GENERAL FACTS

The company “LUKA” Split (Port of Split) was founded on the 11th of December 1989.registered under the number Fi-1106/89 at the court of Split. Earlier this company was acting as one of the two organizational units of the company called RO "LUKA" SPLIT that is as "Port transfer and warehouse" (since 1974). The type of ownership is still a social company as the privatization was not yet made.

The main activities of the company are:

  • transfer of load in ports
  • services in marine traffic
  • maintaining and building of ports, operational shores, break-waters and other objects
  • renting open and closed warehouse areas and services of public warehouses
  • services to the users of the duty zones
  • shipping agency services
  • loading and unloading cars and passengers
  • services in the area of foreign trade traffic

LUKA Split, in the years before the war in Croatia (1991-1995), had a leading place among the middledalmatian ports by traffic, and the position of the 3rd port by size in Croatia has the last 30 years. By building tree "republican" ports in the former Yugoslavia(Koper, Ploce and Bar), the Port of Split, after the Port of Rijeka, was for a long time second in importance with an annual traffic of 1.5-2.0 millions of tons of load thanks to its good geographical position and natural conditions for the acceptance of ships with a deep draught. After that, this port (just as the ports of Sibenik and Dubrovnik) looses a great amount of load. With the reorganization and the specialization to certain sorts of load and building of a terminal for artificial fertilizers, RO-RO gates and establishing the " Duty Free Zone" the Port of Split has succeeded to get back a part of the load and has stabilized the yearly traffic to about 850000 t. However, due to the beginning of the war in former Yugoslavia, the traffic has dropped extremely. (it is shown on the table 1.)
